I do not know if anyone has written about this contradiction. New York City is the HQ of the globalized, commodified, penny-pinching capitalism. People go nuts if the stock market is up or down 1 percent. And yet many prices in ordinary life are simply negotiated, determined by personal relations, whim, or likes and dislikes.
