I like this blog by @fidjissimo on OpenAI’s culture. "we’ve seen the biggest breakthroughs in AI begin as passion projects of a single researcher or two". GPT started as a passion project by Alec Radford, who doesn’t have a PhD. OpenAI feels like the old Bell Labs: bringing together geniuses and nerds (without requiring fancy schools and degrees), and giving them enough freedom to explore directions that matter but are not yet proven valuable. This may be the best model to run a research lab.
